What is the Older Americans Act?
For more than 50 years, the Older Americans Act (OAA) has been the primary piece of federal legislation supporting social and nutrition services to Americans age 60 and older, as well as their caregivers. Specifically, the OAA established a nationwide network of programs and services, as well as a federal grant system to help fund them. The OAA focuses on addressing the unique needs of vulnerable seniors, such as those who are at significant risk of hunger, isolation and losing their ability to live independently.
Why is the Older Americans Act Reauthorization Important?
As your membership association, Meals on Wheels America works to protect, strengthen and increase funding for the OAA and the nutrition programs established by this law - the Congregate, Home-Delivered and Nutrition Services Incentive Programs. Part of this effort includes advocating for a timely OAA reauthorization that addresses the needs of the majority of Meals on Wheels America Member programs and the seniors they serve nationwide. The current law expires in September 2019. To ensure that our advocacy reflects the goals and asks of our membership, we want to hear your thoughts on the next OAA reauthorization process and how we can best support you!
