Farm School NYC 2017 Application for Certificate in Urban Agriculture Programs
Welcome! Farm School NYC offers urban agriculture training through a wide range of individual courses and two comprehensive certificate programs -- 1) the Citywide Certificate in Urban Agriculture and 2) the Farm Intensive Certificate in Urban Agriculture, offered in partnership with the Youth Farm.

APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30, 2017.

CITYWIDE CERTIFICATE IN URBAN AGRICULTURE
Farm School NYC’s Citywide Certificate in Urban Agriculture Program has offered comprehensive, professional-level agricultural training for adults since 2011. Certificate students have two to five years to complete: 1) 14 core courses comprising 320 hours of in-class instruction, about 60% of which is experiential, on-farm training, 2) 4 of 6 advanced courses offering more in-depth training in specialized skills such as animal husbandry and value-added product production and marketing, 3) a 140-hour, season-long farm apprenticeship where students learn by doing under the tutelage of an experienced farm manager, and 4) 40 volunteer hours to support Farm School NYC’s work.

FARM INTENSIVE CERTIFICATE IN URBAN AGRICULTURE
Farm School NYC partners with the Youth Farm in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in order to offer the Farm Intensive Certificate. Students can complete their certificates in 12 months rather than 24 months for the Citywide Program. This expedited 660-hour, year-long training program provides highly motivated students to get foundation via key Farm School NYC core courses -- Food Justice, Botany and Training of Trainers -- and then to take their learning outdoors, spending a full growing season at The Youth Farm, to train in practical sustainable farming techniques. This intensive session meets April - November, three times a week, 22 hrs/week, for 30 weeks. This 'Intensive' component encompasses rotations in key skill sets, 20+ formal workshops, field trips, and working alongside youth for a portion of the summer. Farm Intensive certificate students will practice what they learn through place-based, production-paced training at the Youth Farm.

A required, season-long NYC farm apprenticeship of no less than 140 hours can be started in year 2 on a schedule mutually determined by each student and their selected farm site, while students are completing their advanced courses on weekday evenings. Students may take more than 2 years to complete all program requirements. Visit http://www.farmschoolnyc.org/citywide-certificate for more information.
