San Diego Rotary seeks to empower 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th-grade teachers, primarily in public and charter schools, to better identify and intervene with their students at risk of and targeted for recruitment of traffickers.
Currently, gang members enslave an estimated 3,000 to 6,000 individuals within San Diego, fueling the illicit $810 million industry. Each trafficker generates approximately $600,000 through the forced coercion of their victims. While dozens of dedicated government, law enforcement, and nonprofit organizations focus on assisting survivors, helping educators recognize and engage young people in danger of falling victim to this dark world requires more attention. San Diego Rotary seeks to assist public school districts and charter schools by funding in-service days to enable 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th-grade teachers to undergo the San Diego Trafficking Prevention Collective’s free ProtectNow (
http://protectnow.org) training. Our club will evaluate applicants based on two factors: the level of risk their students currently face from recruiting traffickers; and the education institution’s ability to train the number of teachers within the shortest timeframe.
