It is essential that participants have basic Stat skills and have used microdata in the past. For anyone transitioning from another package (e.g. SPSS, R or SAS) in in need of a quicker refresher, SALDRU has an online introduction to Stata available at
The course will cover the following topics:
• Accessing the NIDS data • Data structure
• Merging within and across waves • Creating analysis variables
• Attrition and sampling weights • Creating and interpreting transition matrices
The course can accommodate 30 participants. There is an attendance fee of R7 000.00 which covers materials, instruction and lunch. Participants may apply for the course fee, airfare and accommodation to be covered by NIDS, although a limited number of scholarships have been secured for these purposes.
The course will run from 9 am – 4.30 pm each day. Please do not apply to the course if you have other commitments which will require you to skip sessions.

Staff and post-graduate students at historically disadvantaged institutions are particularly encouraged to apply. When applying please indicate whether your attendance is conditional on financial assistance, and if so, of what sort. The deadline for applications is 26 October 2017. We will let applicants know if they have been accepted by 1 November 2017.
We expect participants to confirm their attendance with receipt of attendance fee by 8 November 2017 at the latest.
