Our students and their families are under threat. Board Member Karla Griego knows that in order to fight these threats LAUSD must empower communities. There are many attacks coming at students and families in the greater Los Angeles area and, in response, communities have pushed back. Students have raised their voices in their schools and during weeks of walkouts; communities have spoken out. Karla has listened and is ready to stand up against attacks on immigrants, LGBTQIA people, on people of color, and people with disabilities.
Unfortunately, these attacks also translate into potential cuts to funding and programs that serve our students in BD 5. But Karla and others are calling for NO cuts to current school programs and to our educators, custodians, cafeteria workers, and others who support our students every day. While LAUSD has been working to support youth who are being targeted, there is much more to be done and there are additional resources in LAUSD that can be used to support our most vulnerable student populations.
This survey asks you how you think resources should be best used to support students that are under attack. Karla believes that when we support our most vulnerable students, all students are lifted. Your opinions will help Karla push for existing district funds to be moved toward the programs that will most support youth under attack.
In the same way that great teaching happens when students are empowered to participate. Great schools work the same way—empowered communities create stronger schools. Your ideas matter!
This survey lists some specific programs as potential ways to support vulnerable students, but more importantly, it asks you to write in what programs or resources you think would be important to fund.
