This lecture looks at the history, theory and artistry of scale construction in a wide range of styles, and how each scale can, through ‘rotation’, form a colourfully expressive palette of modal colours.

This survey is concerned with scales and modes, and the expressive effect they might have on you. This survey takes about five minutes to complete and requires listening to short audio examples. How would you describe your knowledge of scales and modes (beyond the diatonic major and minor scales)

Fairly non-existent.

I have heard some names, but could not confidently recognise or construct them.

Decent. For example, I am able to recognise and/or build the modes of the major scale..

Knowledgable. I have a fluent theoretical and practical knowledge of many scales and modes.
