LGBTQ+ youth in the United States
disproportionately face mental health challenges and barriers to access for mental health care:
45% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, and
60% of LGBTQ youth who wanted mental health care in the past year were not able to get it.
Life-saving volunteer work that supports LGBTQ+ Youth can include volunteering as a crisis counselor for a mental health hotline or serving as an in-person peer counselor at your campus.
This pride month, VOT is launching an initiative to match VOT chapters, members, and other interested individuals with mental health initiatives in their area recruiting volunteers (whenever possible, volunteers will be matched with LGBTQ+ specific initiatives). By encouraging sustained volunteer efforts, VOT affirms that supporting the LGBTQ+ community is something that cannot begin and end with the month of June.
Once you fill out this form, you can expect to be matched with a youth-supported mental health initiative.
Please note that if you are under 18, your ability to volunteer in this capacity may be limited. If we are not able to match you with a mental health volunteer initiative that accepts volunteers under 18, we will refer you to our VOT Volunteers:
Shelter Service Match Initiative.
