East Kent Gleaning Group: Volunteer Sign-up Form
East Kent Gleaning Group is a part of the UK Gleaning Network, a network of community-led groups that brings together volunteers all over the country to help rescue fresh, surplus fruit and veg from farms where it would otherwise be wasted, and divert the produce from waste to local people in need. Our regional hub network aims to deliver Gleaning Days in East Kent - Covering the districts of Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Folkestone & Hythe and Thanet. We work in partnership with Gleaning Hub Coordinators at Hythe Environmental Community Group and DealWithIT - Transition Deal.

NOTE: Regarding the latest restrictions - as we are community volunteers providing produce for local charities to combat food poverty, we are cleared to continue gleaning activities. We will of course take all sensible precautions and observe social distancing.
Our Covid-19 Risk Assessment has meant we now have to limit our volunteer group size. Please note that when our gleans require only a small number of volunteers, priority will be normally be given to those with the shortest journey to the farm.

We strive to make our Gleaning Days family friendly but on occasions when we have to use harvesting knives, we may not be able to accommodate volunteers under the age of 16.

EKGG COVID-19 MITIGATION PROTOCOLS:
Regarding the latest 'Lockdown' rules - As we are community volunteers providing produce for local charities to combat food poverty, we are cleared to continue gleaning activities. We will of course take sensible precautions and be mindful of social distancing at all times. Volunteers who fall within the category of increased risk of severe illness from coronavirus, (i.e. aged over 70, existing health condition) and/or who live in the same household as a person who is a risk of severe illness from coronavirus, will unfortunately be unable to attend our events at this time.

In light of the Covid-19 outbreak, Gleaning events will have the following additional safety measures to protect volunteers, the public, staff at host farms and redistribution charity staff.
1. Please ensure that you bring your own personal supply of hand sanitiser gel, gloves and sanitising wipes with you on the day, in order to protect yourself and others.
2. To reduce the risk of coronavirus spread amongst our volunteers, hand sanitising will be a mandatory step for all volunteers at the start of the day and before & after eating. Gloves should be used by all and put on after hands have been washed.
3. We shall observe and maintain social distancing - minimum of 2 meters between volunteers/staff.
4. Volunteers should not touch anything on the farm with bare hands. Tools, sacks/crates will not be given to volunteers until they are wearing gloves.
