Expression of interest in Social Media training with @thesiswhisperer
This course will give the participants, tools, approaches and strategies to incorporate social media into their own academic practice on their own terms. While there will be some engagement with the tools, this course will be geared towards supporting strategic decision-making processes around social media. Researchers have limited time and energy to devote to engagement – this course will teach you how to make best use of your available time to learn about, and create material for a wide range of social media platforms.
The aim of this course is to foster a better community of practice around social media at ANU. To this end, those who graduate this course will be asked to disseminate their knowledge and contribute back to the community by participating in further professional development activities at the college and university level.
At the moment this course is a pilot and will be limited to 12 participants. There will be three places for ECRs and nine places for HDR candidates. We will choose participants based on ability to commit to the course requirements, expectations and to ensure diversity of backgrounds and skill levels.
This course will be a blended model and will run over six weeks, begining in early July 2016. There will be a compulsory one hour face to face workshop and one hour of interaction with the rest of the cohort online, via the ANU Wattle platform. We expect there will be an additional four hours a week of personal study time.
By the end of this course participants will be able to:
1) Understand the social media landscape and the various affordances, including the ANU guidelines for social media participation, copyright provisions and intellectual property.
2) Apply theories of social media and digital communication to research practice.
3) Build various digital artefacts and share them, selectively, through social media channels
4) Have begun building their own social media personal learning network, both within the ANU community and online.
This course will align with AQF level 10 criteria (PhD level). Participants will be required to participate in discussions and activities each week and submit a final assignment. On course completion the participants will be issued with a digital badge and certificate of completion from the Director of Research Training.
This course expects that you will be actively signing up for and using social media platforms (although you may choose to delete the accounts at the end of the course). This course will be a bring your own device (BYOD) model and participants should have access to the internet off campus if possible. Participants should have access to a laptop computer and a mobile device with a recent operating system (those who have trouble meeting this requirement should contact the course convenors who may be able to arrange access).
