Dallas Stops Evictions Houseless Committee Demands/Petition
Dallas Stops Evictions Houseless Committee and community allies make the following demands of Dallas City Council. Add your name to show your support!
1) We demand the city immediately stop all Homeless Sweeps, Evictions, Encampment Resolutions or any other activity that allows for the unnecessary harassment of unhoused people. Per its own Memorandum regarding the Temporary Suspension of Encampment Resolution Efforts dated December 4th, 2020, ‘if individual housing options are not available, allow people who are living unsheltered or in encampments to remain where they are.” The memorandum provides plenty of evidence and discussion of enabling encampments to remain as is, and also cites the CDC guidelines for encampment services during the pandemic.
2) We demand the City of Dallas sanction Camp Rhonda, and allow for expedited rezoning of the land for residential purposes. We demand all nearby encampments be allowed to become permanent and recognized as legal given the same efforts. We demand an immediate moratorium on fines and citations to property owners.
3)We demand the City of Dallas follow all CDC guidelines on unhoused persons during the global COVID-19 Pandemic. The City of Dallas must provide current encampments, including Camp Rhonda, with proper sanitation including Porta-Potties and handwashing stations adequate to the population of the encampment.
4) We demand the City of Dallas must provide immediate, equitable, and permanent housing for the residents of Camp Rhonda. The City must provide our unhoused residents with access to social workers, and others who can assist them in applying for any benefits for which they may be eligible.
5) We demand the City of Dallas work with local grassroots organizations to transfer ownership of Dallas Housing Authority (DHA) city-owned properties into a permanent, community-controlled Community Land Trust for permanent and sustainable low income housing, to be administered by local community control committees. We demand as many vacant spaces be put to use with sustainable, individual housing for its current unhoused population as necessary.
6) We demand the city of Dallas put all future for profit projects on hold- for example the new Shipping Container project and funding redirected to free, permanent, sustainable housing in the form of Tiny Houses or redevelopment of currently unoccupied housing/hotels/apartment buildings.
7) We demand the reduction in budget for the Dallas Police Department be put towards our efforts to care for our unhoused residents.
8) We demand all Dallas Police Officers and contracted city workers who harass unhoused persons or use acts of violence against them be fired immediately with transparency.
9) We demand the City of Dallas repeal all camping ordinances and rules within the city limits.
10) We demand an immediate end to the tax breaks for real estate developers within the city limits.
