Nick Deocampo Film Screenings
Catch these films on Filipino artists by filmmaker and film historian Nick Deocampo! 

Organized in line with A Synergy of Ventures: The Postwar Art Scene, the program will feature two films by Deocampo. In Edades: Victorio C. Edades and Modernism in Philippine Art (2004) (74 mins.), Deocampo looks into the life of Filipino visual artist Victorio C. Edades. Recognized as the father of Philippine modernism, Edades is known for his formative influence among local artists with strong modernist leanings. In 1976, Edades was conferred National Artist for Visual Arts for his contributions to the development of Philippine art. Adieu Philippines (1981) (15 mins.), Deocampo's first documentary, was completed when he was a student in Paris. Shot on Super 8, the film documents three Filipino artists living in France at the time: Nena Saguil, Macario Vitalis, and Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Nick Deocampo is a distinguished Filipino filmmaker, film historian, and film literacy advocate. For more than thirty years, he has created a vast array of acclaimed films and video documentaries capturing topics such as life under a military dictatorship, film history, and the environment. He has also written and edited several books on cinema history. In 1992 Deocampo was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines and in 1993 he was recognized in Japan as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World. His outstanding contributions to cinema earned him a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards (FAMAS), as well as a Lamberto Avellana Award from the Film Academy of the Philippines.

These film screenings are organized in line with A Synergy of Ventures: The Postwar Art Scene, on view from 15 September 2024 to 12 July 2025 at the UGF Ateneo Art Gallery, Mr & Mrs Ching Tan Gallery and Mr & Mrs Chung Te Gallery, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University.
