Questionnaire Soap operas and fashion

Soap fan’s experiences of using fashion sites for online shopping.

This survey is part of my PhD research which is looking at how some viewers and fans of soaps search for and buy fashion which they see in their favourite soaps.

The rise of digital media over the past 20 years has resulted in fans of soaps and other tv programmes setting up websites detailing fashion items seen within programmes. This has coincided with a relaxing of broadcast regulations surrounding product placement in television, resulting in an increase of real life brands appearing within programmes. Due to their ongoing broadcast pattern of new episodes and long running characters soaps are uniquely placed to associate fashion and brands to particular characters over time.

My survey aims to find out more about how viewers of soap find out about fashion and garments in soap operas and how they go about purchasing them. It is designed to explore particular social media and TV fashion websites soap viewers and fans use to carry out your enquiries related to soap fashion, focusing particular on clothing and décor items.

I would very much appreciate your help to understand fan engagement with digital media by completing this survey.

Thank you for reading this.

What is the purpose of the study?

There is limited large-scale research available about viewers interest in UK soap opera fashions. This is despite the launch of websites over the past decade revealing brand information of products seen within the latest episodes, and online discourse about soap characters’ clothing. Soap opera is also one of the few television genres that dresses its stars in everyday fashions which, due to its ongoing broadcast pattern of new episodes, viewers see on a continuous basis. Therefore, this project seeks to start to ask viewers to what extent they’re interested in the fashions seen within the genre, whether they use online sources to find out which brands stock the products characters appear in, and whether their relationship with a brand changes as a result of finding out this information.

Who we are approaching to take part in the study?

We are selecting individuals who watch any of the big four UK soap operas – Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks.
