Cambridge residents daily experience some of the exponential population and development growth we have recently faced, reinforced by the 2020 census population figures (see image below), as well as new labs and housing developments, and and large scale investor capital buying up any available Cambridge properties, forcing out long term residents and gentrifying neighborhoods. The Advancing Affordable Housing (AHA)  zoning petition proposes four key zoning citywide changes. This petition :1) modifies the language for A and A-1 districts that currently are zoned for exclusive single family housing (SFH)  to enable owners to add more units within the existing structure, allowing one to legalize many rental units that are now illegal; 2) requires that owners who add more than 3 units add 1 unit that meets the City's affordability requirements (pro-rated for increased units); 3) requires the City's large employers to create an area-wide housing, transportation, parking, and infrastructure plan accounting for 85% of its employees and affiliates by the year 2040, with annual reviews and reporting; 4) requires new onsite above ground parking to be made of permeable materials that allow rain water to penetrate.  Individually and together these four changes will add significantly to both City and area-wide housing, transportation and infrastructure amelioration, and will help address  larger questions of environmental, health, and housing equity.  The petition came together as a result of months of weekly discussions by a citywide housing working group of residents and professionals.                                                                                                          Read the Petition HERE:  https://bit.ly/AHA_Petition
