With more international students on our campus every year, the Institute for International Studies (IIS) would like to help our international students to have the best experience possible while in this country and building friendships with Americans and their families is an important part of this experience. Therefore, we invite you to participate in the International Friendship Program (IFP), where we match international students with LHU faculty and staff members who have volunteered to share American culture and traditions. These volunteers, in turn, have the opportunity to learn about the student’s culture and customs, and perhaps even some of their language.
Separation from family and familiar cultural patterns is often a very difficult and frustrating experience for international students. By helping our international students understand U.S. culture and offering friendship, volunteer hosts will ease the adjustment of our international students to Lock Haven and the United States.
The IFP does not require volunteers to provide any type of financial support or housing, but simply to share their lives and culture with the students. You may choose to do this by inviting your student to your home, including them in special events, such as holiday celebrations or birthday parties; taking them shopping and to the movies; having coffee with them once a month, or just by giving them periodic calls on the telephone.
