TEDxUMD Speakers Competition
UMD is hosting its FIRST ever TEDx event! TEDxUMD is an independently organized event with the goal of bringing together bright minds of the Maryland community to give innovative and inspiring talks that are idea-focused. We are searching for a select few exceptional students who will have the honor of speaking among the other esteemed speakers. TED talks can be on a wide range of subjects and are meant to foster learning, inspiration and wonder - and provoke conversations that matter.

The theme is an integral part of a TEDx event and the theme this year is "The Human Experience". Every TEDx talk should contribute an interpretation, novel insight or understanding of this theme.

Student Speakers will be required to:

-Attend the entire TEDxUMD event on May 3, 2014, and the rehearsal on May 2, 2014
-Provide a complete script of the talk with any accompanying visual guide two weeks before the date of the presentation
-Agree to the TEDxUMD speaker release form
-Work with a representative from the TEDxUMD board to further develop the idea in relation to the theme

Some basic pointers on TEDx Talks--  Your idea should:
-Represent a though-provoking, bold idea or provide a unique narrative
-Reflect a relevant and timely concept
-Present a message that is fresh and innovative, the goal is to spark stimulating conversation and ideas!

Please refer to this guide for TEDx speakers as established by TED to get an idea of what would be expected of you:

Why would you like to speak at TEDxUMD? *
What is your TEDxUMD talk idea? *
Write an explanation of what your TEDxUMD talk will be about. Limit your summary to 2-4 paragraphs explaining the main theme of your idea. Remember to refer to the speaker guide provided as a link on the main description of this form. TEDx has a lot of rules and regulations for speakers and it is important that your talk is on par with the expectations of TED. At the same time, don't worry if your idea isn't fully formed! If chosen, we will work together to develop it in the following weeks.
Optional: Provide a link to a short YouTube video of you explaining your idea. This can be a way for us to view a sample of your speaking skils! Keep the video less than 5 minutes.
Provide a very general, basic outline of the your talk, highlighting the main points that you would focus on. This outline can be in paragraph form or a bulleted list. *
Also: how long do you think your talk will be? Remember-- it can be anywhere from 5-18 minutes.
The most important aspect we are looking into with regard to student applications is its unique contribution to the theme. What does the Human Experience mean to you? How does your talk relate to the theme? *
It is critical that your talk incorporates the TEDxUMD's theme "The Human Experience". Explain how your talk will fit into this theme and how you plan to provide new insight or interpretation of this theme. We know its an extremely broad theme... which leaves room for you to suggest almost any idea :)
This event is fast approaching and will require a considerable amount of commitment from the student speaker. Are you willing and able to make the commitment to the development of your talk to ensure it is up to the high standards of the institutions of both TEDx and UMD? *
