Book Sprint Namibia Application Form
We believe every child should own 100 books by the age of five. In Namibia, that means giving away thousands of free books to children who could never afford to buy them.

On a single Book Sprint day, in just 12 hours, volunteer creative teams work fast to create beautiful African children’s books that anyone can freely translate, print and distribute. Why? Because the cheapest books have no publisher. In a Book Sprint, our participants do the work of publishers - so the only cost is printing. Once the books are created, they are freely available and accessible.

The first Book Sprint Namibia event was sponsored by The German Embassy Windhoek and Goethe-Institut Windhoek, to great success. For this reason, the Embassy and Goethe-Institut are planning a second Book Sprint on 5 October 2024, 9 am to 9 pm.

Do you want to be a part of our Book Sprint? In the form below, let us know about yourself, and your experience in writing, designing, or illustrating. If you're not a writer, illustrator, or designer, but are still passionate about children's literacy, why not apply to help out in a support role? We need photographers, technical support, and logistics wizards to make our very first Book Sprint Namibia a success.
Book Sprint Namibia is an event which can only live through committed volunteers like you. Your work is your gift to the world! Connect with like-minded people and show the world your talent!

Food and drinks will be provided for. You just have to bring your story, your ideas, your laptop.

Successful applicants will receive a small remuneration as compensation for the creative work.

Please note that at a Book Sprint, all participants sign a simple agreement to open-license everything produced on the day (the book and all their component parts) under the Creative Commons Attribution license.

Application closing date: 31 August 2024

Required
5. You're applying to participate as a writer. The writer is responsible for developing the story and getting the words perfect. You will need to bring a laptop on the day to write and edit on. You'll get to work closely with an editor: you’ll need their help to create something that will last. The hardest part is usually keeping it simple: you should be aiming for just five to fifteen words on a page, 250-300 words in total, 12 double-page spreads. And just a headsup: no poetry is allowed (it doesn't translate well, and we want to translate and share as widely as possible). Tell us a bit about your experience.                                                                       Writers: As part of your application, please send the story you want to share with the world in a docx document to booksprintnamibia@gmail.com strictly following the above mentioned word limit and structure. Subject line: Writer's Application plus your full name !!!
6. Writers: Provide your Website/Blog/Portfolio link/Twitter Handle/Facebook page.
7. What languages are you able to write in?
8. You're applying to participate as an illustrator. The illustrator is responsible for creating at least twelve beautiful, storytelling images really fast. No pressure! Please bring your own illustrating equipment and media. If you work in physical media, we’ll have a lowres scanner available on the day, and will arrange professional scanning afterwards. Tell us a bit about your experience. Illustrators: As part of your application, please send a pdf-document with 3-5 of your illustrations to booksprintnamibia@gmail.com Subject line: Illustrator's Application plus your full name !!!
9. Illustrators: Provide your Website/Blog/Portfolio link/Twitter Handle/Facebook page.
10. You're applying to participate as a designer. The designer is responsible for layout and typography. Please bring your own computer running Adobe CS5 or later. We’ll give you IDML files as templates for your cover and book interior. Since you’re the one putting your team’s book together on screen, it's important that you're comfortable using Adobe InDesign. You'll have to draw together the pieces of the team puzzle, realising the visions of the writer and the illustrator while bringing your own talent to the mix. Tell us a bit about your experience.
11. Designers: Provide your Website/Blog/Portfolio link/Twitter Handle/Facebook page.
12. You're applying to participate as a support & logistics wizard. You’re responsible for making sure everyone has the environment they need to have fun and be productive. Whether that means sharing team's progress on social media, assisting with logistics, taking photos and videos, or making sure that there's tea on tap.
13. Preferred support roles *Let us know where your talents lie, so that we can best make use of them on the day! Check all that apply.
