The purpose of the Disciplinary Writing Consultants (DWC) Program is to:

Help students in faculty member’s disciplinary class learn more about writing in their own discipline

Assist students in faculty member’s class learn about their strengths and weaknesses as writers

Help students learn about the value of peer response and the benefits of visiting a writing consultant

Give faculty and Writing Center consultants an opportunity to learn from each other in regard to writing pedagogy and disciplinary writing
CWE Disciplinary Writing Consultant Responsibilities:
- Consultants work up to 100 hours during the semester, meeting in person with students typically outside of class time (to be determined by faculty and consultant), and also possibly assisting with facilitating or teaching writing-related activities in class. Consultants are not expected to provide written comments on students' work and should not evaluate students' work.
- Faculty members mentor consultants to work effectively with student writers in their class, meeting regularly with the consultant, helping their students understand the purpose of working with a consultant, and providing assignment guidelines in a timely manner.
- Participating faculty meet with the WAU director before, during, and after the semester. The before-term meeting is a required 2-hour planning workshop, during which faculty members will design their writing assignments/evaluation criteria and plan ways to integrate the Disciplinary Writing Consultant into their class from the beginning of the term. Disciplinary Consultants will meet with the WC director regularly throughout the term.
- Administer pre- and post-surveys during class time.
- Complete an assessment of the program at the end of the semester.
- Contact the Writing Center director immediately if there are any questions or concerns about the consultant.
Faculty members receive a stipend of $1,500, as well as a $150 stipend to attend the before-term planning workshop. Disciplinary Consultants, who are selected from among the Writing Center consultant staff, are paid an hourly rate of $11.
Priority goes to faculty who are not currently participating in the DWC program and who show/explain a clear plan to utilize consultants consistently throughout the term and/or plan to utilize the DWC at multiple points throughout the semester.
Priority goes to classes that attract primarily sophomores and juniors into courses in the disciplines. We may not be able to support spring semester senior seminars,
