The Yale Education Tutoring Initiative is a free resource connecting Yale student tutors with New Haven & West Haven Public middle and high school students. Students are matched with tutors based on academic needs and meet once per week over Zoom. The goal of YETI is to provide structure, academic tutoring, and mentorship to youth as they navigate online learning. Subjects covered include reading, math, science, history, world language, SAT test prep, college application essay prep, and English conversation for ELL students. Once matched, tutors and tutees will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Saturdays. All meetings will be held over Zoom in pre-scheduled clusters that will be supervised by a Zoom Moderator.
** Time commitment: 1-2 hours/week **
Program Roles:
Tutor - Yale students interested in tutoring and mentoring will be paired with New Haven youth in grades 6-12 and meet with them once per week for 1 hour each session.
Zoom Moderator - For student safety purposes, every session requires an additional person to serve as a "Zoom Moderator," who is responsible for sorting tutor/tutee pairs into breakout rooms and then quietly circulating through the breakout rooms for the duration of the session. In compliance with Yale rules, this is our way of avoiding 1-1 contact between minors and adults. You can volunteer as both a moderator and a tutor, but you cannot serve simultaneously as a tutor and moderator for the same session.
We encourage all Yale undergraduates interested in cultivating academic and mentor relationships with New Haven youth to apply.
