How do we remain hopeful, centered, and ready to act in the face of fear and injustice? How can we create connection and collective wellness within communities facing trauma and oppression? As global authoritarianism continues to pull the world ever deeper into the edge of crisis and collapse, those of us in the fields of social change and politicized healing are in need of effective skills for fostering personal and collective joy, resilience, and resistance.
Somatics, the practice of working with and through the body to transform consciousness and strengthen the feeling of being alive, is a powerful methodology that can be integrated into personal practice, one-on-one work, and group facilitation. In this course, advanced practitioners and teachers Nazbah Tom, Kai Cheng Thom, and Fayza Bundalli weave together decades of training and practice across multiple lineages in an emergent modality called Somatic Resurgence to offer an introduction to somatics that explicitly integrates the urgent need for social and collective change. The practices and frameworks offered in this course are heavily shaped by the teachers’ experience in the fields of community organizing and community health, conflict transformation, sex worker advocacy, and more, as well as their lived experience as BIPOC queer & trans individuals.
Students who complete this course can expect to leave with a foundational set of skills to be used for personal practice, as well as simple somatic tools that can be either integrated into an existing 1:1 practice or work with groups. The course will also offer some support regarding further study and practice.
Kai Cheng Thom, MSW, MSc, is a somatic coach, mediator, and process facilitator who supports individuals and groups to pursue politicized embodiment, trauma healing, and conflict resolution. She is a Lead Teacher at The Embody Lab and a Faculty Member at the Institute for the Study of Somatic Sex Education.
Nazbah Tom, MA, uses an amalgamation of Drama Therapy and somatics to support and guide individuals and groups through a process of embodied learning and transformation.
- Fayza Bundalli, MSW, RSW is a queer, South Asian femme. She came up through Generative Somatics, and now teaches embodiment courses in collaboration with fellow somatics teachers, supervises QT/BIPOC practitioners, and works 1:1 as a somatic therapist and bodyworker. These are her drop-in-the-ocean offerings toward collective healing, aliveness, and power.
