In 2019, UNICEF's East Asia & the Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) conducted a study on children's usage of social media in four countries - Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. As part of its commitment towards inclusivity, the Project involved children from all walks of life and engaged them through focus group discussions and participatory exercises. As a result of a multi-month engagement, a Report was published in February 2020.

This month, on the 19th of September UNICEF Malaysia and Childline Foundation joined forces to Launch the Report entitled EAPRO 'Our Lives Online': Usage of Social Media by Children & Adolescents in East Asia - Opportunities, Risks & Harms. An inter-generational dialogue was conducted and the number of participation on the event day was satisfying.

2020 has seen the world change the way we live and do things due to the pandemic. With the ever growing number of people and especially children going online, the world wide web not only provides opportunities for us to search for knowledge, connect with the world and find entertainment but it is also a place that can potentially be dangerous, full of risks and harms. To help us understand what children are experiencing when they use social media, this children challenge aims to get the children to share 1-3 tips on how to be #bijakonline based on the issues highlighted in the report. The video message should be on any one of the following:

1) How can I stop cyber-bullying.
2) How to protect myself from online sexual grooming, sexual abuse, harassment and exploitation.
3) Stop spreading fake news & hate speech.

This contest is open to children between the ages of 13-17 years living in Malaysia and the closing date is on the 3rd of October.
