Teacher candidates will identify and participate in the literacies of their specific academic discourse. Building on students’ funds of knowledge, they will explicitly teach the academic discourse of their discipline. Academic discourse includes, but is not limited to, vocabulary, writing styles, text structures.

Teacher candidates will critically analyze her/his own teaching beliefs and practices in order to advance student learning. They will explore current political, philosophical, and pedagogical issues surrounding secondary schools, teachers, and students.

Teacher candidates will learn and critique effective pedagogical strategies and will explore the relationships of these strategies to classroom management and assessment. These strategies include Understanding by Design, cooperative learning, and direct instruction.

Teacher candidates will design, implement, and assess two lessons that teach secondary students specific literacy-based strategies for learning concepts in their discipline.
