National Teacher Advisory Council
The American Civil War Museum is looking for teachers from across the United States who are interested in shaping how their fellow teachers and students engage with history. We are looking for educators who:
Teach at any grade level, but especially those who cover content related to the American Civil War.
Are enthusiastic about helping our organization to create excellent, relevant, and useful offerings for teachers and their students, for use on-site at the museums and in the classroom.
Can help shape our vision for how we want to best serve educators and their students.
Are flexible, creative, innovative, and reflective.

Participation in the American Civil War Museum’s National Teacher Advisory Council will consist of:
1-year participation commitment, estimated at 20 hours total active time.
Bi-monthly meetings, occurring on Wednesday evenings from 5:00-7:00 pm ET
October 2020, December 2020, February 2021, April 2021, and a closing meeting in June 2021. The October meeting will be held Wednesday, October 28.
A joint meeting with the Virginia Teacher Advisory Council will be held in January 2021
Teachers from anywhere in the United States are eligible and encouraged to apply.
Due to COVID-19, meetings will be held virtually until in-person meetings are safe to attend.
Participate in bi-monthly meetings.
Advise, evaluate, and assist museum staff in the development and implementation of museum offerings for teachers and students, including field trip programs, teacher professional development, and online resources for classroom use.
Help grow the scope of the Teacher Advisory Council and shape its function for future years. This year’s particular focus is supporting teachers across the country in providing digital and other resources that are useful for distance learning.
Advise on the creation of a national curriculum for teaching the Civil War and its legacies.
Complimentary educator membership to the American Civil War Museum for 1 year, and all associated benefits of Museum membership.
Upon request, a certificate or letter acknowledging participation for potential re-certification points.
Networking with fellow educators from around the Commonwealth.
Opportunity to guide the development of offerings for all teachers and students utilizing both personal experience and professional best practice.
