Do we live in an age of unprecedented migration and forced displacement? Last year, the number of international migrants  — persons living in a country other than where they were born — reached 244 million. 65 million of these migrants were forcibly displaced, fleeing from war, poverty and persecution. The general public has been debating the recent immigration influx and the current refugee crisis with seemingly modern notions of economics, identity and conflict. But is this debate really so modern? Alexander Sampson, Reader in Early Modern Studies at UCL, doesn't think so. Join him and fellow students to contemplate and debate historical and contemporary notions of borders, the meaning of citizenship, and the human right to move freely around the globe.
