About SGP Circles
The Society of Gender Professionals' Circles are groups of members with common thematic and/or geographic interests and/or expertise, or a common language, who interact on a regular basis to learn from each other, coordinate local actions, pursue diverse collaborations, and share resources. Circles are founded on feminist theory and principles of communities of practice and learning communities.
Circle members are encouraged to actively contribute as community agreement facilitators, meeting facilitators, reflective observers of the circle processes, community keepers weaving the group
social fabric and amplifying marginalized voices, agenda activists driving the
learning and ensuring meeting agenda reflects circle objectives, and/or as documenters taking notes and recording action points.
About SGP Feminist Self-care Circle
The SGP Feminist Self-care Circle has a small but diverse base of members actively interested in learning more about self-care. Each meeting includes time for sharing, discussion and learning of a practical self-care tool. Members have discussed the concept of self care, the different ways it can be defined and practiced, why self care is an important feminist practice, and how to avoid burnout. Most recently, the Circle convened a book club on "Who is Wellness For: An examination Wellness Culture and Who it Leaves Behind" by Fariha Róisín to explore wellness, identity, and well-being.
Between meetings, the circle co-leads share relevant articles and resources via email, or the SGP Facebook and LinkedIn pages. Moving forward, the circle will expand its speaker series and draw on the collective experiences of members to contribute to the body of knowledge in relation to Feminist Self Care.
In upcoming circle meetings, members will explore the following issues:
How to find time for self care?
How do we design self care in a way that it does not cost money?
How do we create self care methodologies that are inclusive and intersectional?
How to keep doing social justice work without burning out or withdrawing?
How to practice self-care without feeling selfish, entitled or overindulgent?
Non-western and indigenous models of self care.
