MacDowell Fellows Emergency Time Request
MacDowell has a policy for “emergency time,” which enables MacDowell Fellows to request a short residency to assist with their situation. We understand how vital uninterrupted creative time can be, especially during moments of urgency. While we are glad to offer Emergency Residencies when circumstances and availability allow, these opportunities are limited, unpredictable, and cannot be guaranteed. We encourage you to explore additional avenues of support during this time of need. When possible, submit your request well in advance of your availability, as it takes 2–4 weeks to review, process, and add your name to our Emergency Request List.

Before proceeding, please review the following conditions for emergency time:
  • The applicant must be a MacDowell Fellow, meaning a prior artist-in-residence at MacDowell.
  • The applicant must not have been denied a residency for the same period being requested.
  • The applicant must have a legitimate emergency situation. This is defined as circumstances beyond the applicant’s control that prevent critical work from being accomplished and preclude waiting until the next application period. Emergency time requests should not be used as an alternative to applying.
  • Priority will be given to those who have not previously benefited from the policy and to those who have been impacted by a natural disaster. Openings in the schedule are first filled by individuals on the wait list, then by those requesting emergency time.
  • No more than four weeks can be requested.
  • Once the form below is completed, the applicant must also write a formal letter of request to Executive Director, Chiwoniso Kaitano. The letter should contain the reason for the request and a project description. E-mail this letter to Julie Hamel .
