FOCUS Churches Jan 2022 Online Book Study - "Stride Toward Freedom"
Please join us for a four-part conversation on "Stride Toward Freedom:  The Montgomery Story", Martin Luther King's classic account of the first successful large-scale act of nonviolent resistance in America: the Montgomery bus boycott.

A young Dr. King wrote Stride Toward Freedom just 2 years after the successful completion of the boycott. In his memoir about the event, he tells the stories that informed his radical political thinking before, during, and after the boycott—from first witnessing economic injustice as a teenager and watching his parents experience discrimination to his decision to begin working with the NAACP. Throughout, he reflects on how his Christian faith inspired and sustained his activism, and how his activism shaped his faith.

We’ll study in four sessions, and look at the following themes: the context of Montgomery and integration in 1955, nonviolence and social change, the role of faith communities, and King’s development between Montgomery and the Poor People’s Campaign. Our facilitator will be Joe Paparone who currently serves as the Lead Organizer for the Labor-Religion Coalition and a longtime friend of FOCUS churches.

After you fill out the form you'll be added to a listserv and receive e-mail information about the study. Contact Joe Paparone with any questions: jpaparone@labor-religion.org

We'll meet on Zoom, Wednesday evenings in January, the 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th - from 7-8:30pm.

Zoom works best with a smartphone or computer and web camera, but has an option to call in by phone as well.
