Adult/Parent Counselors welcome too!
Join us as we travel north to serve in two low income rural Native American communities.
The Chiloquin community is located in the forested mountains just north of Klammath Falls Oregon nestled between the Williamson and Sprague rivers. Over 33% of the families in Chiloquin live below the poverty line. Members from the Klamath Tribes living in Chiloquin include Klamath, Modoc, and Yahooskin. Youth will stay in the the local Methodist church in the center of town (opposite the town square, field and playground) and shower at the local high school gym.
The Smith River community and rancheria small rural community is remote, beautiful and, because of the Pacific Ocean, often cold, damp and foggy (hooray!). The Smith River Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe of Tolowa Indians and about a third of area residents are Hispanic, many of whom are recent immigrants from Mexico and Central America. SSP will be serving people from all parts of the local community. We will be housed at the Smith River United Methodist Church and Smith River Elementary School which are across the street from each other.
For the most part, we will work on the homes including roofing, building wheelchair ramps and porches, painting and other general home repairs. It's challenging but fun service work where youth take on complex projects, learn to safely use power tools, and cultivate teamwork and problem-solving skills. No construction experience is needed, and you’ll be amazed at all of the work that your youth teams complete!
What's the cost? $450 per youth (scholarships available). A non-refundable $250 deposit is due now to hold your spot (Payments #1 & #2). Payment #3 of $200 is due May 15.
