강연 초록:
In this presentation I will show that language learning takes place mainly outside the classroom and that our role as teachers is primarily one of preparing and supporting our learners in their informal learning. One way to do this is to develop classroom tasks and interaction that are built on learners' activities outside the classroom. One form of entertainment popular with many learners is playing computer games. Their potential for education is only slowly starting to be recognised but previous research has identified their possible contributions to collaborative learning, learner independence, and increased student engagement. In this talk I will argue that games have an important role to play in the language learning process and will explore their pedagogic contributions to language acquisition. I will demonstrate a number of games and identify their educational purposes as well as practical ways of using them in both the language classroom and to support learning outside the classroom. I will show that games can offer a powerful way of encouraging learner autonomy and can facilitate many aspects of language learning, including both receptive and productive skill. will also report on a recent research study in which I found that game play resulted in learners' increased willingness to communicate in the target language. Of course, implementing games in the classroom is not without potential downsides and I will discuss these as well.
