MLive Detroit Game of the Week - BOYS: Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice at Detroit U-D Jesuit (1/23, 7:30 p.m.) *
Brother Rice (7-2) has been one of the surprise teams in the first half of the season while Jesuit (8-1) is expected to be good. Kevin Hayes has been looking excellent for Brother Rice but Jesuit guard Cassius Winston has been better. Brother Rice does not lose easily but the Cubs have size in the paint and too much going for them to lose on their home court. PURCELL'S PICK: Jesuit 67, Brother Rice 55
BOYS: Clarkston at Southfield (1/23, 7 p.m.) *
This has been a great rivalry for years as both teams have always been among the strongest in Oakland County. Clarkston (10-0) is coming off of a dramatic overtime win against Oak Park and is ranked No. 6 in Class A. Southfield (6-3) is looking to get an upset on its home court. Southfield has the ability to make it close but Clarkston will be sharp and ready for this rivalry. PURCELL'S PICK: Clarkston 65, Southfield 51
GIRLS: Birmingham Roeper at Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett (1/23, 7 p.m.) *
Giving these two small schools some justified attention. Liggett (7-3) and Roeper (9-1) were considered to contend for the MIAC Blue Division title heading into this season and, so far, both teams have lived up to that. Liggett is 3-1 in the conference while Ligget is 5-0. Liggett has Lola Ristovski (17.7 PPG) leading the way and that is enough for me to pick the Knights. PURCELL'S PICK: Liggett 53, Roeper 45
BOYS: Detroit Western International at Detroit East English (1/23, 4 p.m.) *
This is a battle between two of the top teams in the Detroit PSL. Western, of course, is ranked No. 1 in the state and adding transfers Josh McFolley and Gerald Blackshear to the roster. However, East English has been scoring like crazy as of late and Kamari Newman has been piling up the points. This could be a shootout. However, Western is just too strong, top to bottom. PURCELL'S PICK: Western 81, East English, 77
BOYS: Pontiac Notre Dame Prep at Detroit Loyola (1/23, 7 p.m.) *
It is a battle for first place in the Catholic League AA Division as Loyola (7-3) and Notre Dame Prep (8-1) clash. Loyola has won the last six contests against Notre Dame Prep, not having lost to the Fighting Irish since the 2010-11 season. Yet, The Irish are a much better team than the last three seasons and are hoping to change the trend. This will be a good one but Loyola is too battle tested at this point and will get the win. PURCELL'S PICK: Loyola 63, Notre Dame Prep 52
GIRLS: Rochester Hills Stoney Creek at Farmington Hills Harrison (1/22, 7 p.m.) *
This is a tough one to pick. Harrison (8-2) is coming off of its first loss of 2015 while still coping with the loss of senior leader Kyla Roland. Stoney Creek (9-1) has looked great all season but hasn't faced an opponent with Harrison's skill level. I'm going with Harrison in this one. PURCELL'S PICK: Harrison 50, Stoney Creek 40
BOYS: Detroit Renaissance at Detroit Henry Ford (1/23, 4 p.m.) *
Outside of Detroit Western, the PSL seems to be wide open. Although the records of these two teams differ with Renaissance at 4-5 and Ford at 9-1, this could be a competitive game. Reneaissance has played a very tough schedule and is used to tough opponents. Still, I don't think Henry Ford will be caught off guard in this one. PURCELL'S PICK: Ford 76, Renaissance 61
BOYS: Romeo at Clinton Township Chippewa Valley (1/23, 7 p.m.) *
This is a MAC Red Division game that can have a strong impact on the league standings. Romeo is 4-3 heading in but 3-0 against division opponents. Chippewa Valley is 8-1 but 2-1 in the Red. Since this is a big game in the Red, I'm going with the Big Reds. PURCELL'S PICK: Chippewa Valley 62, Romeo 54
GIRLS: Plymouth at Westland John Glenn (1/23, 7 p.m.) *
Plymouth (8-2) is rolling along in KLAA South Division play but faces an always challenging Westland John Glenn team (5-5). Yet, John Glenn has been falling short to its tougher opponents this winter and Plymouth continues that trend. PURCELL'S PICK: Plymouth 52, John Glenn 40
BOYS: Walled Lake Western at White Lake Lakeland (1/23, 7 p.m.) *
Western is looking to improve on its 10-0 record while Lakeland (6-3) is looking to keep pace in the KLAA North race. With Western at 4-0 in the division and Lakeland at 3-1, a win by the Eagles could really mix things up. Too bad that won't happen. PURCELL'S PICK: Western 59, Lakeland 51
