Provenance
In the Middle Ages, the Lombards played an important role in the development of banking. These money changers spread over Western Europe from the 12th century onwards. When trade between the cities of the Netherlands on the one hand and Italy on the other was booming. Particularly via the fairs in the intermediate region, Champagne, they travelled with the traders and businessmen who went from fair to fair.

Together with the Jews, who were also active on these money markets because of the ban on church interest, they played a role as lenders. Their stall, a table with scales and bags of coins, is also at the origin of our name "bank", derived from the Italian word "banco" or "banca" for "table".

Lombards were originally also called 'cawarsini', 'coarsini', 'coarcini'. There are various explanations for that term. In most cases, the term is associated with the French town of Cahors, birthplace of Pope John XXII, who, when the papal seat was established in Avignon, was said to have granted table-keeping licences to his compatriots. The name is also associated with the town of Cavour in Piedmont. Many Lombards, named after the region of Lombardy, were in fact Piedmontese. Another explanation relates the name to the surname of one of the first of these Italian traders.
Developments
The Lombards moved to European cities and were granted a license to hold a "table of loan" (or "bank of loan") for a period of ten to fifteen years. Permits were often granted from father to son, so that the same families could run a loan bank for a long time.

A common problem in the Middle Ages was the high interest rates charged by the lommerds for the loan. Given the scarcity of money on the money market, and the interest ban on Christians, it would sometimes even rise to 80%. Because the Lombards often charged high interest rates, their trade was sometimes banned or restricted. Sometimes a maximum interest rate was imposed by the government. The government also regularly obliged the Lombards to return all the buildings they owned, without interest.

In the longer term, such measures generally proved to be ineffective. From the 15th century on, charitable institutions, but also the government set up Mons van Mercy or city banks as an alternative, in principle to protect the "little man", so that they could provide him with credit at a lower rate. Gradually, private pawnshops or pawnshops lost importance.
