Charles Gabriel Devine Elementary School

Charles Gabriel Devine was born in Randolph on December 15, 1892. He graduated from Stetson High School's Class of 1911, serving on the class’s Executive Committee.

Charles anticipated America's entry into World War I, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Newport, RI on May 11, 1917. He became a machinist mate, second class, in the U.S. Naval Reserve Force. In 1918, he was training in naval aviation when he contracted the flu, which developed into pneumonia, from which he died on September 21, 1918. The September 23, 1918 edition of the Brockton Enterprise had the following notice: "Mrs. Mary Devine of North Main Street [cor. Wales Ave.] received word Sunday from the War Department of the death of her son, Charles G. Devine, Master Mechanic in the 15th regiment, U.S. Naval Base, Great Lakes, Illinois. His death was a result of the Spanish influenza which developed into pneumonia. He is survived by his mother and two brothers. The body will be brought back for burial." Charles was buried in St. Mary Cemetery.

Elizabeth G. Lyons Elementary School

Elizabeth G. Lyons was born on Cross Street in Randolph, on June 18, 1872.  She attended the elementary grades and graduated from Stetson High School at the age of fifteen. After graduating from Quincy Normal School at the age of seventeen, she began teaching in 1889 at the "Old Tower Hill SchoolAt this school Elizabeth G. Lyons was Principal and teacher of Grades 1, 2. and 3. The older residents of this area hold fond recollections of this humanitarian sawing wood and keeping the old black stove going. Her love for children may be illustrated in many ways but it is sufficient to say that she bought food and begged clothing for the less fortunate children in this area

Elizabeth G. Lyons was married to Timothy F. Lyons of Randolph, and was the mother of eleven children, five of whom are living today. At this time Elizabeth G. Lyons did substitute work in the Boston Public SchoolsUnder Superintendent of Schools Adolph O. Christiansen, Elizabeth G. Lyons returned to teaching. She became both Principal and teacher at the Belcher School. Later she was appointed assistant to the Superintendent and also as Director of Instruction in Randolph, Holbrook and Avon, at that time a joint township. In later years she was Principal of the Prescott Elementary School and taught there until her retirement in 1946Elizabeth G. Lyons did not retire at the age of 70. The School Committee and Superintendent asked her to remain since it was war time. She taught school for three years at no expense to the Town of Randolph. When the Great Teacher called Elizabeth G. Lyons to her eternal rest on December 28, 1957, former Superintendent Christiansen wrote of her "With this message I bow to the memory of a great teacher. Her work is finished but the influence, quality and sincerity of her long public service have not finished”.
