With the growth of social media platforms, there is an increasing trend of users transforming these digital social spaces to sell, discuss and shop for products. This convergence of social media and e-commerce is social commerce.
In 2021, 90% of Instagram users followed one or more business accounts, and up to 44% of their users shop weekly through this platform, using features like shopping tags and the Shop tab. The trend accelerated through the months of lockdown and self-isolation during the pandemic. A new future in e-commerce may have been rewritten.
Hence, with this context, what can we learn from global trends to project the Southeast Asia scene? What are the opportunities with social commerce startups? What should we as investors watch out for?
To explore this topic, we have Jeffrey Seah, partner, Quest Ventures who had mentored and invested in numerous social commerce, e-commerce, and adtech startups (with a strong advertising executive background) to share with us the social commerce investment landscape, the journey of social commerce, evaluation of social commerce startups and the potential outcome of these startups. Joining the workshop panels are Ser En of Sendjoy and Wei Qing of Vybes, both founders of social commerce startups.
