“  THE COURAGE TO SURVIVE    ”

Date: 25 september 2026
Time: 9 am - 11 am (CET)

Eighty-one years after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the University of Siena is hosting an international meeting with representatives of Nihon Hidankyo, the Japanese confederation of survivors (Hibakusha) awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024.

The event, introduced by Claudio Melacarne and chaired by Loretta Fabbri, aims to be a space for reflection on the maintenance of the "nuclear taboo."
The heart of the event is entrusted to the direct and institutional testimonies of two key members of Hidankyo:
• Masako Wada (Deputy Secretary General of Hidankyo)
• Masashi Ieshima (Board Member), who will share his memory as a survivor of Hiroshima (at the time a child of only 3 years old). Ieshima will trace the devastating long-term effects of radiation on his family and health, while denouncing the Japanese government's historic lack of full state recognition and compensation for civilian casualties.
In a highly volatile current geopolitical environment, the meeting aims to raise awareness among the public and young people of the need to work on atomic disarmament. This sensitive topic will also be an opportunity to discuss the role that educational processes can play in supporting emancipatory learning. How to use and value stories to build more resilient communities? Can we really learn from the past, under what conditions?

Please complete all required fields.
The information collected will be used exclusively for organizational purposes.

The link will be shared 2 days before the event.
