This year, we have launched a school-based iteration of our popular field program will be a single, 2 hour in-person session directly in the classroom. We hope that by traveling to schools we can relieve barriers such as the lack of bus funding, while still delivering our signature tuition-free, high-quality arts and literacy programming. Writing Roadshows are offered throughout the year on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
Teachers should remain present AND active partners for the full 2 hours of the field trip.
***PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION:
With a finite number of spots available for the 2024-25 program year, the 826CHI team will review each application and prioritize schools that align with our priority enrollment criteria, which includes
schools with a low number of existing arts partnerships, as well as classes with low-proficiency English Language Learners, BIPOC students, and students from limited-income families. As part of our review process, we are also prioritizing engagements that reach across full grade levels and are committing to longer term school partnerships to expand the number of students we serve in a given school community.
826CHI Writing Roadshow Descriptions
Images and Imagination, (Grades 4 -8)
Writer's block has met its match! In this high-energy writing workshop, students are guided through an adventure of writing stories using the story mountain as a framework, with images from magazines as their inspiration. These stories can go a multitude of directions, depending on which pictures are chosen and how they are interpreted. Staff and volunteers support students as they make a collage of their images and develop clever, inventive stories. This workshop helps students explore effective, tangible, and memorable skills in the writing process and helps make writing feel more fun for students who may be reluctant writers or think they have nothing to write about.
Spoken Word Poetry (Grades 9-12)
Spoken Word Poetry students will learn about the history of spoken word poetry and its deep roots in Chicago. They will also apply poetic elements to their own original poems individually and as a group and get the chance to share out loud. This Field Trip is great for students who are expressive and enjoy spoken word poetry. This is a great addition for classrooms preparing for, culminating, or in the middle of a poetry unit.
