After viewing the three videos on learning the science and art of seed saving, and attending a hands on class, please complete this survey to advise us that you are fully prepared to be a seed saver for the Brown County Library.

Those that have completed all the requirements will be offered a sample set of pollinator bags to help keep unwanted cross-pollination from happening. Seed Stewards will also be offered a garden sign to let others know why their garden may have a different look.

I have viewed the video, "Seed Saving Training - Preparing for the Future - Session One" and I understand how and why to: (Please check all that apply.)

Home saved seeds over time become more hardy and resilient.

To label, label, label; both the species and variety in each step of the seed saving process.

Perfect flowered plants like beans and peas are easiest for seed saving, as the chance of cross-pollination is very low.

We do NOT save seeds from hybrids, only heirloom or open-pollinated plants.

Prevent unwanted cross pollination by isolation of time, space and physical barriers.

I have viewed the video, "Seed Saving Training - Seed Harvest and Processing - Session Two" and I understand how and why to:

Let seeds fully mature and dry on the plant before harvesting the seeds.

Ferment wet seeds, like tomatoes and cucumbers, to easily remove the gel seed covering and help prevent plant diseases.

To process dry seeds by either threshing, winnowing, or screening, and sometimes all three.

Store seeds in a cool and dry place in paper envelopes or bags.

Label, label, label through the harvesting and storing process.

I have viewed the video, "Seed Saving Training - Final Recommendations - Session Three" and I understand how and why to:

Complete a germination test on seeds.

Complete a Seed Donation Form for each type of seed harvested.

Return seeds to the library in a breathable container, like a paper envelope or bag.

Take special precautions with seeds that cross pollinate.

To get seeds from biennials takes two years, so special effort needs to be taken to overwinter these crops.

Seeds submitted by a Brown County Seed Steward, will be the seeds used

The Seed Saving page on the newmastergardeners.org website is a good place to start for reputable resources.
