NUGW-UE - Get Involved!
Want to get more involved by becoming a Department Organizer and/or joining one or more of our Committees? Let us know here and we'll follow up with you!

All members are also welcome to join Organizing Committee (OC) meetings which occur weekly on Thursdays at 5:30 pm in the NUGW-UE Office (708 Church St, Ste 234) and on Zoom. These meetings are dedicated to active organizing efforts around the most important issues our coworkers are facing. We welcome all to join these meetings when they can, in particular stewards, who members will become familiar with as point-people for union related matters over the year.

Admin has been using FERPA as reasoning to refuse to tell us why they aren’t paying people properly. Signing your FERPA waiver will give trained stewards access to details of employment, including your appointment position and stipend, which are crucial to filing grievances on your behalf.

The NUGW-UE Solidarity Committee coordinates relationships between NUGW-UE and other labor/activist groups on campus, in Evanston/Chicago, other UE locals and graduate worker unions, and beyond. The Solidarity Committee will also work towards building camaraderie and solidarity between NUGW-UE and marginalized communities which includes but is not limited to political education, solidarity actions, and ensuring that issues of marginalization and oppression are addressed directly.

The International and Immigrant Workers Working Group operates under the NUGW-UE Solidarity Committee to organizer on issues related to international workers and immigrants whose precarity has further intensified in recent times. The working group collaborates with other organizations, associations, and collectives on similar issues such as organizing Know Your Rights trainings, advocating for international and immigrant workers, educating our members, and participating in related actions.

The NUGW-UE Internal Solidarity Committee is a constitutionally enshrined committee that is specifically dedicated to organizing for structurally marginalized workers. Its objectives include working with the Executive Board and membership to foster unity, building solidarity around the issues of structurally marginalized workers, and overcoming divisions that might arise within the membership.

The NUGW-UE Communications Committee is responsible for managing NUGW-UE's social media accounts and platform presence, fielding media requests, fostering strategic communications relationships, and transmitting communications consistent with approved organizing plans and/or your collective goals. This includes making pamphlets and graphics that execute key organizing messaging, as well as maintaining the website.

The trans rights working group is a space to discuss ongoing organizing around trans*, gender non-conforming (GNC), and gender non-binary (GNB) issues on campus!

Department Organizer (DO) is a volunteer position. Duties of DOs include working on behalf of the Local, attending General Membership Meetings, helping to recruit new members during and outside of membership drives, helping facilitate communication with members in their department, attending weekly organizing meetings when possible, and contributing to the organizing goals of the membership of the Local. DOs liaise between their home or employed departments and the Local, informing their fellow graduate employees of Local activities, and communicating with the Stewards on behalf of graduate employees as the need arises.
