Yarrow Intergenerational Society for Justice is opening applications for its Board of Directors. If you are interested in becoming a board member please complete this form by August 29, 2021.
A nomination committee will convene to review all applications. Successful applicants will receive an email notification by September 5, 2021.
Successful nomination applicants will be required to attend Yarrow's online AGM on September 12, 2021, as well as provide a short statement about yourself during the AGM. Nominated candidates will be elected during the AGM with a majority vote from members in attendance. To attend our AGM, visit the Zoom link:
Yarrow is seeking Board of Director Nominations from candidates who have experience or passion for at least one of the following areas:
- Grassroots organizing
- Intergenerational community building
- Health advocacy, medical interpretation, and public and community health
- Direct patient care, particularly care of marginalized people and knowledge of health inequities
- Indigenous, Black, People of Colour community building, and mindfulness around East Asian settler privilege
- Concern for property and retail gentrification
- Experience in anti-poverty government advocacy
- Anti-oppression frameworks and approaches towards and not limited to poverty, over-policing, substance use and mental health issues
- Finance and accounting
- Governance and policy
- Fundraising and grant writing
- Communications and public relations
- Human resources and administration
- Non-profit law, labour law, and medical law
- Strategic planning
- Ability to speak and/or write in Cantonese or Mandarin
- Knowledge of Chinatown and the Downtown Eastside neighbourhoods

Board members will be expected to:
1. Work to uphold Yarrow's Mission and Values, outlined on our website:
https://www.yarrowsociety.ca/about2. Dedicate 3-10 hours per week for a one year term, and up to 15 hours during fundraising and other periods of high output
3. Check Slack messages with board and staff daily for urgent and general updates
4. Attend 1-3 meetings a week, depending on the board member's role and capacity
5. Collaborate and lead the strategic planning of the organization with the operations manager
6. Provide supervision to senior staff members
7. Manage finances, including the adoption of annual budgets and financial statements
8. Hire staff members and maintain an HR policy manual
9. Work in partnership with the staff team to ensure the programs and services offered are reflective of the needs of the community and in alignment with the organizational mission and values
10. Plan an annual fundraising event and fundraise $50-100k
11. Join and co-lead small groups to take on various projects (ex. HR Committee, Finance Committee, Fundraising Committee, and Language Access Campaign Committee)
12. Plan and attend monthly Board meetings, additional Board meetings may be necessary depending on the needs of the organization.
