With the arrival of the month of Ramadan, and as the streets fill with decorations and glow with lanterns, we are waiting for you to join us for a special traditional lantern-making workshop.

We will gather at the Athar Lina Headquarters, where we will briefly talk about the history and craft of the lantern-making. Following which we will visit one of the workshops in al-Khalifa District to hear from ‘Amm ‘Ali, an expert lantern-maker, about his experience in the lantern-making craft and trade, and to observe up close the traditional manufacturing steps.

We will then try our hand at making part of the process of creating this year’s tin and glass Ramadan lantern. This activity will take place at the Khalifa Community Centre, where through our creative output, manifest what we’ve learnt: the story of the fauns (lantern), its connection to Cairo, and how it has evolved alongside the city through the ages.

The lantern is not just a symbol of celebration or a lighting tool; it is living heritage that has passed through different eras and continues with us to this day.

Note: After finishing the workshop, the final steps of collecting and welding the participants' lanterns will be done by ‘Amm ‘Ali, then shipped and sent to the participants within one week.

This event is part of al-Khalifa Tours program run by the Built Environment Collective, and all proceeds allocated will support the sustainability of the initiative's educational and community programs in al-Khalifa neighbourhood.
