Marching Band Parent/Student: The time has come to sign up for fall activities, and your son/daughter has expressed interest in performing with the 2019 Westbrook Music Department's Fall Marching Band.
We are very excited to have every student who wishes to be a part of the marching band, as each student is equally valuable to the success of this program as any other student. This is a safe and positive environment for students to be in where they can feel successful and challenged simultaneously.
With the exception of mini camp in June, our full band season spans from Monday August 12th through the banquet on Saturday, November 9th. Performances will begin the first Saturday in September and run through the second Sunday in November (potentially). Here are the requirements for student participation: *
Required
1. BE HERE: Students will be assigned a drill position before camp starts, and it is VITAL that every student who completes a contract to be in the marching band follows through with their commitment. IF YOU ARE IN DOUBT ABOUT THIS, PLEASE STOP NOW AND TALK WITH YOUR MUSIC TEACHER BEFORE YOU COMMIT! *
Required
2. JUNE MINI CAMP: Tuesday & Thursday June 11th and 13th, 6-8 pm are the only required full band practices before summer vacation. Rehearsal (for 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th grade) will begin in the high school band room. Please dress in gym clothes. Bring water, your music, your instrument and a pencil. *
Required
3. BAND CAMP: As you see on the marching band calendar, band camp will be August 12-23 (weekdays only). Please be sure your family's schedule allows for your child's attendance for this. These are not optional rehearsals. *
Required
4. REHEARSALS: We will have a sectional rehearsal to start the week, followed by an ensemble rehearsal on Thursdays. The rehearsal schedule is on the calendar.
MONDAYS: Brass and Woodwinds 3:00-5:30 PM & Percussion 5:15-8:00 PM
WEDNESDAYS: Guard 5:15-8:00 PM
THURSDAYS: Full Band 3:00-5:30 PM
5. Beginning September 14th, the Saturday rehearsal times are not final, but the time that is listed on the calendar is the earliest time that students will be required to be at school. Weekly emails will go out with exact Saturday rehearsal times throughout the season. You will have at least 4 days notice, but will never be before the indicated time. *
Required
6. RESPONSIBILITY: All students are responsible for maintaining their own copies of music, a dot book (which they will use to keep track of their field coordinates) and a pencil, which they will bring on the first day of band camp. THIS IS TO BE KEPT AND BROUGHT TO EVERY REHEARSAL THROUGH THE ENTIRE SEASON. A lost dot book or music will require the student to meet with the section leader PRIOR to rehearsal to copy down their spots and/or receive their music again. *
Required
7. ABSENCE: In any case of necessary absence, due to illness or family emergency, call Mr. Smith directly at 423-2658. Sending a message through another student is not an acceptable form of communication. Please do your best to schedule all driver’s ed, doctor's appointments, dentist appointments, or other appointments outside of rehearsal times around the schedule you are being given now. You have the calendar well in advance so the students can have success during rehearsal. *
Required
8. UNIFORM/SHOES: Each new student will have the option to buy their own marching band shoes. We have plenty to supply for each student. Each pair is $35. Please include a check made out to the “Westbrook Music Boosters” if you would like to purchase a new pair for your student. *
Required
9. PERFORMANCES - We will perform at some of the Friday night football games at Westbrook High School (maximum of four). On Saturdays, we perform as part of the Maine Band Directors Association circuit (mebda.org) and the New England Scholastic Bands Association Regional circuit (nesba.org). Our exact performance times will be finalized at the end of August. *
Required
10. AVAILABLE APPAREL FOR PURCHASE - We have many Westbrook Music clothing items you may purchase in addition to what is included in this packet. Please go to Westbrookmusicboosters.org for the forms. Items may be purchased all year long. *

I have read and understand the scheduling commitments required for my son/daughter to participate in the 2019 Westbrook High School Marching Band. I understand that neither rehearsals nor performances are optional. My child's schedule is cleared, and they will be able to commit to full participation in the fall Marching band show. I also understand the commitment of Mini Camp in June as well as Band Camp in August. I support my child in this activity and they will be on time for rehearsals.
