About this Award: To celebrate the legacy and achievements of Katherine G. Johnson on the anniversary of her 100th birthday, the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter will honor her legacy. As a rocket scientist, Ms. Johnson was a trailblazer during her 35-year career at NASA by breaking down barriers of race and gender. As a physicist and mathematician, she was an expert at calculating complex mathematical equations of orbital mechanics. Ms. Johnson calculated the trajectories, launch windows, and emergency return paths for astronaut John Glenn’s historic space mission and the Apollo Project. Her unwavering personal courage, brilliance, and accuracy were determinant to the United States space exploration program. To quote John Glenn, “If she says they’re good [meaning the numbers], I’m ready to go.” In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. WTS wants to honor a candidate who embodies and carries on Ms. Johnson’s legacy.
