Timber Responds is a multi-year annual national student design competition that positions timber construction as a direct response to South Africa's built environment challenges. In this year's edition, themed "Designing for Local Impact," Students are invited to design an architectural or structural proposal in which timber plays a substantial role as the primary construction material. The design should engage meaningfully with its South African context whether social, environmental, spatial, or cultural and demonstrate how timber, applied with skill and intention, can produce work of genuine built and social impact. The brief is deliberately open. Students are not required to address a prescribed problem or building type. What is required is that timber is used substantially and thoughtfully, and that the work demonstrates an understanding of sustainability as assessed through the Integral Sustainable Design framework developed by Mark DeKay (see Competition Brief).
