STAND Policy Coordinator, 2013-2014
STAND is building a network of informed, committed student advocates. As the Policy Coordinator, you’ll be responsible for figuring out exactly what they should be advocating for. In close collaboration with the Education Coordinator and a team of in-house student conflict analysts, as well as our partner organizations in the atrocities prevention movement, you’ll develop STAND’s official policy “asks” - that is, opportunities for U.S. policy to address our conflicts of concern, whether it’s legislation, a presidential appointment, or support of a Security Council resolution. You’ll then work with the Campaigns Coordinator to turn these policy entry points into accessible, responsible, and well-informed campaigns around which our members can organize. Finally, you’ll work with our team of Regional Organizers to identify states and congressional districts in which more grassroots capacity is needed in order to effectively target the decision-makers we need to influence.

Position-specific qualifications:

1) Strong leadership skills, especially the ability to motivate and hold others accountable (you will be expected to manage multiple Task Force members)

2) Strong policy research skills, including the ability to track pending legislation

3) Creative thinking skills, specifically the willingness and ability to proactively identify possible entry points for U.S. engagement on conflicts where no obvious opportunities (e.g. pending legislation) exist

4) Ability to track and evaluate policy recommendations by STAND’s various partner organizations, so as to determine whether STAND should adopt these asks

5) Ability to communicate often-complex policy analysis and recommendations to audiences of all knowledge levels

6) Adaptability to shifting policy situations and variable student advocacy interests

7) Flexibility to respond to urgent developments in existing conflicts, and potentially the emergence of new conflicts
