Scientist Saturdays is new initiative created jointly by Science Museum of Virginia and Virginia Academy of Science to provide public outreach opportunities for VAS members at SMV. The goal of this program is not only to provide outreach opportunities to VAS members and bring awareness to the organization, but to also help the public understand the importance of scientific research and its public benefit (aka, why the public should care and support scientific research!).
On the last Saturday of each month in 2026, from 10 am to 1 pm, a volunteer scientist from VAS will be provided with a space at the Science Museum of Virginia to be able to talk about their area of research, their science discipline more broadly, and field questions from the public, through an engaging, interactive activity and public science communication skills. The Science Museum of Virginia will provide a standard 6 ft rectangular table, two folding chairs, and a sign where your name and discipline will be displayed for the public to see!
In the form below, you will have the opportunity to indicate which months you are available, along with your area of research, discipline, and contact information. We will then create a schedule for the year and notify you of which date you have been assigned to early February. To prevent gaps in the schedule, we ask that all volunteers indicate at least two dates which they are available, so we can also assign you as a standby in case a volunteer has to cancel.
