The Queer Cinema Project (QCP) Fellowship is a year-long program to support SFSU Cinema students making LGBTQ+ themed films. The Fellowship includes faculty advising, workshops, rough cut screenings, funding stipends and online distribution promotion. Students with queer or queer-adjacent film ideas will receive input and guidance during the pre-production, production and post-production stages. During editing, students screen cuts of their films at regularly-scheduled QCP feedback sessions attended by faculty, visiting filmmakers and peers. A $200 stipend is provided to each accepted filmmaker, and students are eligible to apply for additional funding through the annual Barbara Hammer Film Fund, named after the legendary lesbian experimental filmmaker and SFSU alum. In the spring, completed films are programmed in a Queer Film Finals screening. Students are trained in festival submissions and educational distribution opportunities, and their films are included in QCP’s Vimeo page to promote international distribution, visibility and social change. The Fellowship is supplemented by other QCP-supported activities including workshops and screenings/discussions with queer filmmakers, as well as internships with local queer production companies and filmmaking organizations such as Frameline.
