Boston's Indigenous Public Spaces Initiative

Boston’s Indigenous Public Space Initiative (BIPSI) is advocating for the creation of cultural space for use by Native American and Indigenous Peoples to strengthen the voice, visibility and comradery among urban Indigenous people and allies in the greater Boston area.

For more than forty years, the cultural space adjacent to the 105 South Huntington Ave. building in Jamaica Plain was used by Boston’s Indigenous community. After this space was developed, there was loss of space for urban Native American and Indigenous peoples to engage in cultural practices. Boston’s Indigenous Public Space Initiative was created out of the need to have space for Indigenous community, cultural, ceremonial, and educational activities.

We are proposing the founding of a ceremonial circle and other traditional structures at Franklin Park to help serve our community, cultural, and educational purposes in safe space. By collaborating with Indigenous organizations and the city, BIPSI will foster a greater sense of community through exercising our aboriginal rights, culture, and expression in urban environments.
