Each class lasts approximately one hour. Due to library staff considerations, instructors must submit their requests at least one week in advance. To provide the best possible experience for students, e-mail any assignment information, handouts, etc. to Mark King at kingm@cravencc.edu.

    Class Descriptions

    • Information Literacy This class teaches students how to determine information needs, locate sources, evaluate information, and how to use information. • ACA Library Introduction ACA students will read the online portion of the orientation and complete a short quiz before visiting the library. During the library visit, students will be introduced to the library website, online catalog, NCLIVE and given a short tour. Students will have practical experience searching the catalog and finding a book on the shelf. • Library Catalog Searching This class focuses only on the library catalog. Students will have practical experience searching the catalog for a book, and then finding it on the shelf. Other topics covered include placing holds, renewing books, and accessing library accounts. • NCLIVE and Online Resources This class introduces students to the library's online resources. Students will have practical experience finding resources online. Other topics include searching Google and evaluating websites for their research value. • Information Exploration (Advanced Searching) This workshop teaches students, through use of an example topic, how to narrow a topic into an effective thesis statement. Students are introduced to the library catalog, NCLIVE and other online resources. An online version of the workshop is available. • MLA Style & Profile This class teaches students the importance of citing sources in an academic research paper. Students will learn how to format their paper in MLA style using Microsoft Word. The class also focuses on in-text citations, annotated bibliographies, and creating a references list. Students are highly encouraged to bring their research papers. • APA Style & Profile This class teaches students the importance of citing sources in an academic research paper. Students will learn how to format their paper in APA style using Microsoft Word. The class also focuses on in-text citations, annotated bibliographies, and creating a references list. Students are highly encouraged to bring their research papers. • Specific Assignment If you have a specific assignment we will make a custom research guide for your course. This will be used during the class (information literacy). Students can refer to it after class, and instructors can link to it in Moodle. Be sure to upload assignment handouts, guidelines, and other relevant documents using this form. • Library Use (No Instruction) Choose this option if you'd like to bring your class to the library during class time. • Computer Lab Use (No Instruction) Choose this option if you'd like to reserve the computer lab during class time.
