What is the Underscore?

"The Underscore is a vehicle for incorporating Contact Improvisation into a broader arena of improvisational dance practice; for developing greater ease dancing in spherical space—alone and with others; and for integrating kinesthetic and compositional concerns while improvising. It allows for a full spectrum of energetic and physical expressions, embodying a range of forms and changing states. Its practice is familiar yet unpredictable." - Nancy Stark Smith

What is the GLOBAL Underscore?

The Global Underscore (GUS) is a yearly event where the Underscore is practiced simultaneously at various times across the globe for a 4hr period. There are many ways to participate in GUS. Check out the website to see where else people will be practicing and virtual options for participation.

What is a talk-through?

Since the underscore practice itself is not verbally guided, the idea is that you show up to the practice already "knowing" the Underscore. A talk-through is where you can learn what it is/how to practice it! Bring your notebook, as you will be instructed to draw the "glyphs" of the various aspects and take notes on what they mean.

I understand that contact improvisation is a practice that involves physical and emotional risks (like straining your back or feeling overwhelmed) and am open to learning ways to mitigate risk and increase fun for myself and the community. I have read the Guidelines and Accessibility info in the above description. *
As we will be in close physical contact with each other, we emphasize being mindful about virus exposure and attendance.
