International Academic Workshop on "India within Planetary Boundaries" is organized by the Department of Hydrology, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in collaboration with Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany during 16-19 February, 2027.
"Please note that this refers to the global Earth-system assessment concept and should not be confused with the 'planetary layers' concept studied in physics"This 4-day workshop explores the Planetary Boundaries (PB) framework, and its application to India and South Asian contexts, examining how nine interconnected Earth-system processes, namely
1. Climate Change,
2. Change in Biosphere Integrity,
3. Land-system Change,
4. Freshwater Change,
5. Modification of Biogeochemical Flows,
6. Ocean Acidification,
7. Increase of Atmospheric Aerosol Loading,
8. Stratospheric Ozone Depletion, and
9. Introduction of Novel Entities
regulate planetary stability and resilience.
"For those who are unfamiliar with the Planetary Boundary framework we recommend reviewing the resources and available at the following links to prepare for the workshop"
Through comprehensive lectures, interactive working sessions, and collaborative discussions, participants will understand India-relevant indicators and control variables while investigating cross-boundary interactions across river basins, agricultural regions, and urban systems. The workshop is designed for early-career researchers, PhD candidates, and practitioners in hydrology, climate science, atmospheric sciences, and water resources who seek to translate global Earth system boundaries into meaningful, evidence-based regional assessments and contribute to South Asia's scientific leadership in PB Science.
Note: Since seats are limited, selection shall be based on how close your research aligns with any specific Planetary Boundary (PB) and your tentative presentation title. Any research article you have published in PBs will also be considered.
