Join us at golden hour -
4:00-6:00 PM on Saturday, February 1 - to help mālama and imagine a public site where current and future generations can gather to reflect, mourn, and honor those who have faced the challenges of HIV/AIDS and other forms of oppression and erasure in Hawaiʻi, and to celebrate those who survived and bravely paved the way toward a more just and inclusive world for all.
Participants will meet at 4:00 PM in the Kakaʻako Waterfront Park Overlook, atop the winding path on the Ewa (right) side of the park entrance off the free public parking lot at the makai end of Cooke Street.
There will be an opening oli and historical introduction to the site, followed by litter pick-up, then talk story and sharing of ideas about its potential as an enduring community memory site.
The event will be hosted by Lei Pua ʻAla Queer Histories of Hawaiʻi in partnership with Hawaiʻi Health & Harm Reduction Center, University of Hawaiʻi Medical Student Pride Alliance, and the City & County of Honolulu Rainbow Employee Resource Group.
Trash bags and gloves for litter pick-up will be provided, along with water and light refreshments. See below for additional info about safety precautions from the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation.
