To start the process of changing the name of Theodore Roosevelt Middle School in Eugene, OR and gathering community input for a new name, people have to say they're supportive of renaming of the school. Submitting this form indicates that you are supportive of a name change for the reasons indicated in the rationale of this survey (link:

Here's a compressed version: 94% of 4J schools named after a person are named after a man and 94% are named after a White person. Yet, 50% of students are female and 30% of 4J and TRMS students are students of color. Changing the school's name would allow us to better reflect the values and identities of our community, which honors diversity and strives for inclusivity. Theodore Roosevelt does not embody our community's values well. Throughout his quotes and writings he often states that Whites are meant to dominate and "civilize" non-Whites. His racism permeates his quotes and writings, for example when he was quoted saying, "I don't go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of every ten are..." Such ideas are far from the heart of our community, and it is time to more accurately show who we are by carefully choosing a school namesake symbolic of our values.
